Strontian Parish Church Memorials Project

Dualchas’ aim is to preserve, protect and promote the heritage and culture of the Sunart District.

As part of this project, our volunteers have been recording the memorials and graves within the Strontian churchyard and old burial ground at Drumnatorran.

When the Strontian church yard was in use, there was no known written record of the graves or memorial specific locations.  This information was kept via local knowledge of the families over generations who were laid to rest there.

When planning for the community buy out of the church building, the Sunart Community Company commissioned a geophysics survey of the church grounds, to identify where the graves are located and specifically to establish that there have been no burials in the North end corner of the church yard.

Dualchas volunteers have been working on creating a record of the memorials, to ensure that for years to come knowledge of these final resting places can be retained.

Extremely careful cleaning of the memorials has been ongoing and individual records created for each plaque, stone or marker.  Once all the information has been collated Dualchas will produce a booklet which will be available in the Heritage Centre for viewing and also information will be available online.
