After a lengthy period of planning, negotiation and fund-raising, the Sunart Community Company has successfully purchased the Longrigg Woodland.
Longrigg Woodland will now be managed on behalf of the community.
As the independent consultants who carried out the initial feasibility study noted, ‘Community ownership will not only safeguard this asset for the community enabling them to fulfil many aspirations, in addition, through the restructuring of the woodland, it will enhance the local environment improving the landscape, increasing biodiversity and eventually linking the woodland with other habitat networks.”
Our goal now is to employ a Project Manager, who will oversee the most effective harvesting of the appropriate timber, while developing a longer-term programme to develop the woodland in ways that will benefit as many members of the Sunart community as possible. This might, for example, include a woodland school or skills centre, and the creation of new nature walks.
