Oakwood Tourism & Crafts

Your community owned shop

Oakwood Tourism and Crafts is our community owned shop, with all profits being used to support funding of other community projects.

The shop was originally the visitor information centre, which closed in 2017.  With the help of a grant from the Scottish Land Fund we were able to take the building into community ownership, carry out an extensive programme of repair and refurbishment, and then relaunch the centre in 2019.

Our objectives

From the outset, we had four key objectives, which continue to guide the development of the Oakwood centre today:

  1. To provide visitor information services through partnership with the local tourist association SMMAATA
  2. To provide an opportunity for our talented local producers to showcase and sell their work
  3. To be a sustainable and enjoyable project for the community
  4. To raise funds for the Sunart Community Company Charity to aid its community projects and its mission to Help Keep Sunart a Great Place to Live, Work and Visit.

Oakwood today

Today, Oakwood Tourism and Crafts is thriving.  The centre operates as a combined tourist information centre and cooperative retail hub for many of our local artists, photographers, jewellers and craftspeople.  Staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers, including some of our local producers, and led by a full-time manager, Oakwood plays a valuable role as part of Sunart’s dynamic economy and culture.
