Longrigg Community Woodland: Project Update March/April 2026

Harvesting at Longrigg Community Woodland continues to make good progress, with significant changes now visible across the site. The latest image highlights just how much work has been achieved in a short period, marking an important stage in this long-term community project.

Safety on Site

While harvesting operations are ongoing, the woodland remains a no-go area. Heavy machinery is in use daily and it is not safe for public access. Please follow all safety signage and avoid the site until works are complete and it is formally confirmed safe to reopen. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Timber & Firewood from Longrigg

One of the key benefits of the community purchase has always been improved access to local timber. This includes both lorry loads available now, and smaller, more flexible quantities for future local use.

At present, uptake has been lower than expected. We have commercial buyers lined up for all harvested timber, so we will only retain wood for community use where there is confirmed demand. This applies to both bulk loads and smaller quantities – if we don’t know there is interest, the timber will be sold on.

If you think you may want timber of any kind, now or in the future, please get in touch with Craig (Longrigg Co-ordinator) as soon as possible. He can note your interest or direct you to Scottish Woodlands where appropriate.

We also have a specific opportunity with larch timber, which is naturally durable and well suited to a range of uses. A stand is about to be harvested and cut into 6 metre lengths, suitable for construction, cladding, fencing or firewood. Please get in touch soon if this is of interest so we can retain some locally. Have Your Say – Woodland Survey

We are currently developing a new Woodland Management Plan for Longrigg and would really value your input. The plan will help guide how the woodland is managed in the future and ensure it reflects community priorities.

The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. If you have any issues accessing it, please contact Craig.

Get Involved

Volunteer working mornings continue on the third Sunday of each month, starting at 9.30am. These sessions are a relaxed and practical way to get involved, and no experience is needed. The next session is Sunday 19th April.

More updates will be shared as work continues.
