Public Notice: Possible Sighting of Hemlock Water Dropwort

Sunart Community Company has been made aware of reports of Hemlock Water Dropwort, a highly toxic plant, being found on beaches and shorelines in parts of Cumbria and Argyll and Bute.

While this plant has not been formally confirmed in the Sunart area, there is a possibility it could be present. Members of the public are advised not to touch the plant and to keep children and animals well away.

Hemlock Water Dropwort can cause skin irritation and is extremely dangerous if ingested. Dogs are particularly at risk, as the plant has fleshy roots that may be attractive to pets. The leaves can resemble parsley, making identification difficult.

As a precaution, people may wish to avoid beaches and shorelines for the time being and remain vigilant when out walking, especially with dogs.

If you believe you have seen this plant locally, please do not handle it and report the sighting to the appropriate authorities.
